Sometimes you will obtain a file that claims to be in vector form, but is actually an auto-traced image. These are common from clip-art websites, even the big ones. This leaves a series of nodes touching each other as they go around the outline. Use the menu ‘Create->Outline->Reconstruct Outline’ to simplify the artwork.
