These three In-the-Hoop Gift Tags were all created using StitchArtist Level 1, proving that you don’t need advanced tools to create personalized projects that look polished and professional. Even better, each tag introduces a different digitizing concept that you can apply to countless future projects. Project 1 – Free Standing Lace Gift Tag
Let the Lettering Drive the Design
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is drawing the outer shape of a freestanding object and only thereafter trying to squeeze lettering inside it. This often leaves them without enough room to handle the text and style they want to create. Though we can sometimes have to work around an existing stock shape, for those creating their own designs, there’s a better option.
Create the Lettering First!
Choose your font, size, and adjust your text spacing for the layout you want, selecting sizes and settings that make sense for embroidery. These necessary elements will then be sure to run well and cleanly. That foundation of properly scaled text helps shape the rest of the project. With those elements set, you’ll know exactly how much space your personalization requires. With that you can create or adjust the surrounding shape to fit the text rather than cramming the much more complicated lettering elements inside a shape that doesn’t suit them.
This simple change in planning creates a much more balanced project, making personalization much easier. It’s a key reason why so many embroiderers learn simple shape drawing and digitizing when they want to be sure their projects run and fit their vision.
Freestanding Fabric
This particular project also demonstrates how you can use a Free Standing Lace fill to create the “fabric” that supports the lettering, making for a simple no-cut solution for gift tags. With the FSL fill and the proper Free Standing Lace underlay applied to the the satin border and ribbon loop, all you need to do is stitch on your soluble material, rinse, and relish in your finished tag!
Project 2 – Marine Vinyl or Cork Gift Tag
Think About Assembly Before You Digitize
Great digitizing isn’t just about drawing objects—it’s about thinking through how the project will actually be stitched.
Before creating a single decorative element, plan the embroidery sequence.
- Where does the placement stitch belong?
- When is the backing fabric added?
- How will the final decorative border finish the edge and secure the backing?
By planning the construction first, your stitch order naturally falls into place and you’ll spend less time fixing problems later. This project also shows how a simple copied outline can become a beautiful decorative finishing stitch with just a change of stitch type.

Fewer Nodes Create Better Designs
If there’s one lesson I hope every new digitizer remembers, it’s this:
Drive like you’re looking through the windshield—not the rearview mirror.
When tracing artwork with Draw with Points, don’t obsess over every little bump as you create it. Keep moving forward. The software often smooths earlier sections as you continue adding points. Check out our video showing the basics of how to Draw with Points for more information.
Remember: More nodes are not necessarily better.
Using fewer nodes creates smoother curves, makes editing much easier, and results in cleaner-looking embroidery. It’s a simple habit that will improve every design you create in the future.
